Remembering Our Magic…..An invitation to rediscover the wonder hiding in plain sight.
October conjures up warmth, comfort, spookiness, and magic.
I've always lived in a place where the leaves change color, cozy sweaters make their annual appearance, and the urge to bake an apple crisp or simmer a pot of soup comes on strong. The light of early fall softens everything, wrapping the world in a gentleness we will surely miss come November and December.
There is something about October that invites us to slow down, turn inward, and remember the things that make us feel alive.
Costumes and candy are front and center, pumpkins adorn our doorsteps, and for 30 glorious days, the world seems perfectly okay with everything magical. Witches, ghosts, fairies, and mystical creatures are welcomed into our homes, storefronts, and imaginations.
Yet wouldn't it be amazing if magic could be front and center 365 days a year?
What if we didn't need a holiday, a costume, or permission from the outside world to believe in something extraordinary?
Because when we choose to see life through the lens of magic, we invite wonder and beauty into even the most ordinary moments.
And magic, my friends, is EVERYWHERE.
Magic is a sunrise and a sunset.
Magic is the right friend texting or calling at the exact moment you needed them most.
Magic is a rebate check arriving on the very day a bill is due and you were short.
Magic is finding the last parking spot on the street when you're running late.
Magic is the job offer that finally comes through just as you were about to give up searching.
Magic is wildflowers, waterfalls, mountains, rivers, and streams.
Magic is dog kisses when tears are streaming down your face.
Magic is a hug when the load you've been carrying has become too heavy to hold alone.
Magic is the song that comes on the radio and reminds you of someone you love. The feather that appears along your path. The unexpected conversation with a stranger that leaves you feeling a little less alone in the world.
Magic is the synchronicity that makes you stop in your tracks and wonder, What are the odds of THAT?
Sometimes magic arrives with fireworks, and sometimes it slips quietly into our day, almost unnoticed.
I think somewhere along the way, many of us forget how to see it.
As children, we didn't need convincing that the world was filled with possibility. We believed in fairies, imaginary friends, wishes upon stars, and things we couldn't necessarily explain. We collected rocks because they were beautiful, talked to animals as though they understood every word, and found entire universes in our backyards.
Then adulthood arrived with its responsibilities, expectations, deadlines, and endless to-do lists. Somewhere between paying the bills and remembering to schedule the dentist, we began to trade wonder for practicality.
But who decided we had to choose?
We can be responsible adults and still believe in magic. We can pay the mortgage, fold the laundry, and navigate the complexities of being human while leaving room for the extraordinary.
Magic doesn't require us to abandon reality. It invites us to experience it more fully.
And perhaps that is what October is really offering us. A gentle reminder to reconnect with the parts of ourselves that still believe, still wonder, and still delight in the things we cannot always explain.
So this October, open yourself up to magic!
Dress up in costume and let your inner child come out to play. Order the pumpkin latte, the apple coffee cake, or a steaming bowl of squash bisque. Whatever is seasonal to where you live, indulge in it and honor the beautiful period of time we are in.
Adorn your altar with acorns, fallen leaves, and photographs of your ancestors. Honor the earth beneath your feet and those who walked before you.
Place a pumpkin by your doorstep. Light a candle in the evening. Open your windows and doors, even just a crack, and allow the crisp autumn air to awaken the energy within your home.
Take a walk without headphones. Notice the changing colors, the smell of the earth, the sound of leaves crunching beneath your feet.
Make a wish. Pull an oracle card. Sit beneath the moon. Bake something delicious and share it with someone you love.
And when something unexpectedly beautiful happens, don't be so quick to dismiss it as coincidence.
Let yourself wonder.
Let yourself believe.
Let yourself remember.
Because the magic was never something we outgrew. It was simply something we stopped making room for.
And the beautiful thing about remembering is that we can begin again at any moment.
Be magical. Be authentic. Find the simplicity in the season.
And when November arrives and the costumes are packed away, the pumpkins have softened, and the world returns to its regularly scheduled programming, don't pack your magic away with them.
Carry it with you.
After all, October may be the season of magic, but living a magical life is a choice we get to make every single day.
With love and a little magic,
Maura ✨
